About Tom Barney

Many customers think that since Tom Barney owns a bookstore, he is an expert on books, but that is not the case. Tom is a retired radio announcer and manager who has simply always loved books and meeting and talking to people. Tom says, “You meet the nicest people in a bookstore”.

Tom was born and raised in Warren, Pennsylvania, and during his junior year of high school, he became interested in radio. He particularly enjoyed being on the radio. After graduating from high school in 1966, he began what became a 52-year career in the radio business, interrupted only once when he served three years in the army (1968-1971). In September of 2018, Tom retired and moved from Binghamton, New York to Woodstown, New Jersey, in the Garden State’s southern part. Tom and his wife Paula wanted to be closer to their families so they could see their four girls and their grandchildren more often.

Knowing he’d need meaningful work to keep him from growing old, he turned to his love of books and people for inspiration. After much thought and planning, he felt that a bookstore would be the perfect option. His wife, Paula, says, “I married Tom for better or worse, but not lunch.” Barney Loves Books has been open since December of 2018 and has proven to be a source of great enjoyment for Tom, his community, and his customers.
